Evolving the model of Family Office Networks

Intergen.Family is a collaborative learning and action network that fosters intergenerational “response-ability”—the ability to respond—in the family office space. Intergen serves and champions the unique role family offices can play in engaging long-term structural challenges and opportunities few other actors can anticipate and address. It does so by engaging short and medium-term goals of family office stakeholders while making accessible the benefits of long-term strategic goals that take multiple generations to realize. Intergen’s core competence is developing and delivering leading-edge event programming, facilitation, collaborative learning, and action, all centered on human development that honors freedom of choice and individual purpose. Intergen’s mission is to align family legacy with planetary and human flourishing.

Context

It was the beginning of 2022 and, as the pandemic revealed its challenges, businesses faced with an uncertain future realized the need to update their business models and determine the way forward. Intergen was no exception: what did the pandemic scenario mean to them? Given Intergen’s primary focus on in-person experiences, what would an online model look like? What would a revamped value proposition be? There was a great opportunity to rethink conventional standards and redesign their offering as a future Family of Affinity Office.

Thus, Intergen and Agami embarked on a journey to explore Intergen’s origins and future trajectories. Our shared goal was to understand Intergen’s various forms of value creation and to translate that information into practical tools.

From March 2022 to June 2023, Agami facilitated weekly and bi-weekly online sessions to explore the following themes:

  • Storytelling: genesis and futures;

  • Opportunity spaces;

  • Stakeholders and strategic partners;

  • Governance and multiple forms of capital;

  • Value propositions and business scenarios.

Results

Agami created a safe space that allowed Intergen to explore the ideas they wanted to bring to the world, including:

  • Understanding the challenge: How can Intergen support the transition to make wealth work for all of life?

  • Clarifying the concept of interconnectedness: What is trust and how is it manifested in family and business relationships?

  • Prioritizing solutions and design value propositions: Which ideas are in-alignment with Intergen’s mission and today’s present moment?

As a result of this process, Agami designed a toolbox that contains more than 30 tools. It is the foundation for Intergen’s user experience, currently serving three distinct groups: generational wealth family members, family office (F.O.) stakeholders, and leading-edge system thinkers and change-makers.
